Behind the Scenes:
South Jersey Region
Sports Car Club of America
For those who race or volunteer their tireless time every HOT, RAINY, COLD, weekend away from home and family, did you ever think "who are the ones that are behind the scenes of that weekend event?" There are two Specialties that just appear out of nowhere and hopefully are not taken for granted. They are The Equipment Chief and Crew and The Food Services/Hospitality Crew.
When you report for the morning briefing for the position that is the life blood of the sport all the equipment is laid out either at the assigned station, or equipment is ready to take with you to use. How does it get where it is supposed to be? It is the SCCA Equipment Team or just the one member that took it upon him/herself to get it there.
These are dedicated SCCA Volunteers Members that have the foresight to have the equipment purchased, maintained and ready to use. That person or group is at the race track before all of us are leaving for the weekend event. Transporting the vehicles and equipment to the track via the Clubs equipment trucks, trailers or even their own vehicles, making sure that all the STUFF gets there and is in working order and is set up.
Then you have all the Behind the Scenes activity going on while we are at our stations doing what we do best. I know we all thank each other for the great jobs we do all weekend and beyond, but do we really know what goes on "Behind the Scenes"? We all know what goes on with each of our own positions, but do we know what goes on behind the scenes while we are out there in the trenches. The Equipment Chief and Crew that handed you your tool for your task, is running around repairing and transporting to other work stations the STUFF that is needed for us to have fun.
And yes the next day when we report to the track and "son of a gun" there is that STUFF just sitting there again ready for us to do the daily task of HAVING FUN. Some unknown force from beyond just had the STUFF appear just where we need it.
The "Behind the Scenes" is a place that we take for granted just as long as our tools are ready when we need them. We all know that is not true, we all can appreciate the work and dedication our Equipment Chief puts in to the task of giving us the opportunity to HAVE FUN!
How about the food and beverage that we devour at the track on Our SCCA Weekends when we have all that fun that we have. That is another "Behind the Scenes" story that needs to be told. This bunch is the crew that we thank when we sit back in our chairs after lunch because we ate too much and need a nap instead of going back to our stations. The hot meal that is served to us when we are having fun on those Cold, Rainy, Windy, days at the beginning and the end of the racing seasons, and those Hot Summer days (then there's that nap again).
And what about those dinners and worker get-togethers every weekend evening, (YEA, Love those). That team has to plan, purchase the STUFF in advance, store and at times pre-prepare then transport to the track, cook and then serve, there is that Equipment Thing Again. I know for one, when I get to the track for a South Jersey Region SCCA event and open the door to register for the weekend the aroma of fresh popped popcorn is in the room making it difficult to register with a bag of popcorn in one hand and a hand full of popcorn going to my mouth.
How about first thing in the morning there is a table adorned with fresh Danish and a large pot of Coffee brewing. What a way to start a day at the races!
Who the Heck puts this STUFF out? I know, The Night Crew! Wrong it's those Volunteers that took on the task and responsibility we call SCCA Members that are "Behind the Scenes''.
Oh Yea, THANK YOU!!!
You know the food is good and plentiful, not because of the hours in the elements, but because of the dedication of our hospitality and equipment specialists better known as The Zane Family Foundation.
Their efforts and devotion are never overlooked and truly appreciated by all. It doesn't matter if it is Hot Dogs, Burgers, Hot Soup, Pork Chops or Popcorn (which are always delicious) the main ingredient is our Members. We are South Jersey Region Sports Car Club of America, that's what makes everything work. Out Front or Behind the Scenes, WE make it work!!!!
